Mobile Friendly: Accelerated Mobile Pages

Accelerated Mobile PagesAccelerated Mobile Pages add speed and more user engagement when they’re using a mobile device or tablet. And the speed mobile users expect today is something that needs to be considered for the future.

I have been encouraging my clients and readers to address the mobile friendliness of their web sites for a few years now, and with the latest addition to the web experience – Accelerated Mobile Pages – it is time to take mobile to another level.

What is the Accelerated Mobile Pages project?

AMP Pages

The Accelerated Mobile Pages (“AMP”) Project is an open source initiative that came out of discussions between publishers and technology companies about the need to improve the entire mobile content ecosystem for everyone — publishers, consumer platforms, creators, and users.

Today, the expectation is that content should load super fast and be easy to explore. The reality is that content can take several seconds to load, or, because the user abandons the slow page, never fully loads at all. Accelerated Mobile Pages are web pages designed to load near instantaneously — they are a step towards a better mobile web for all. ~ https://www.ampproject.org/support/faqs/

Why AMP?

Today mobile users demand speed and ease of use from their web experience. Statistics indicate higher bounce rates from mobile users that is directly associated with slower loading web pages. Using the AMP format will make it far more compelling for people to consume and engage with your web site, and your site will be highlighted as an accelerated page within the search results. Google recently announced that AMP is not a ranking factor, but that doesn’t mean AMP content won’t get some sort of boost from them in one way or another.

An AMP Example

You can see what this web site looks like by clicking here, and one of my dart shirts gallery sites by clicking here. If you resize your browser to different, smaller sizes you will see the content adjust accordingly.

The AMP treatment makes things load extremely fast, formatted in a way that small screen users can enjoy. Speaking of acceleration, It reminds me of a favorite inspiration and his famous inspirational quote:

If everything seems under control, you’re not going fast enough. ~ Mario Andretti.

Mobile Has Arrived

The need to have a mobile friendly web presence has never been more clear. Users from every demographic are employing their mobile devices for discovery, shopping and more.
